Saigon to Singapore

Verdant Group’s story is one of resilience, foresight, and enduring purpose. What began as the careful stewardship of family wealth has evolved over three generations and 25 years into an institutional-grade investment platform, shaped by discipline, purpose, and a lasting commitment to values.

Chapter I

Saigon

By the late 1930s, the family had established its entrepreneurial foundation in Saigon, South Vietnam. Under the leadership of the family matriarch, the Cheng siblings built thriving trading enterprises in household essentials, ironware, and auto parts, gradually expanding their reach across Vietnam and Cambodia. These ventures culminated in the establishment of Hhuán Chéng Steel, one of the region's foremost steel mills.

By the mid-20th century, the family had become recognised figures within Southeast Asia's business community, respected not only for their commercial success but for their civic contributions. Family members assumed leadership roles in educational, medical, and cultural institutions, reflecting a tradition that placed enterprise in service of the broader community.

Chapter II

Renewal across the region

The upheavals of the 1970s tested the family's resilience. Relocating from Vietnam, the family rebuilt its commercial footprint through trading and manufacturing across Asia's emerging markets. This period was also marked by a steadfast commitment to education, philanthropy, and civic engagement, ensuring that commercial success remained anchored in social responsibility.

The third generation carried this legacy forward with a broader global perspective, embracing innovation and institutional professionalism. Armed with international education and experience across finance, investment, and leadership, the family steered decisively toward structured asset management, bridging entrepreneurial heritage with modern investment discipline.

Chapter III

Returning to Southeast Asia

Following more than two decades of disciplined capital stewardship, the family began a deliberate return to its Southeast Asian roots in 2012. This journey reached a defining moment in 2020 with the institutionalisation of its Singapore-based family office platform, bringing longstanding investment and governance activities together under a structure built for resilience, neutrality, and generational continuity.

Located in one of the world's most dynamic financial centres, this decision marked a homecoming to the region that shaped the family's commercial beginnings and a forward-looking strategy to strengthen resilience, neutrality, and cross-border agility. Our platform reflects a lasting commitment to purposeful capital and long-term continuity across generations.

A quarter century of discipline, adaptation and growth

Since its inception in 1999, what began as the careful management of family wealth has evolved into an institutionalised investment platform shaped by professionalism, discipline, and long-term purpose. Each chapter reflects a consistent commitment to preserving and growing capital across generations.

1999–2008

Building the Asia-Pacific foundation

In the wake of the Asian Financial Crisis, Verdant Group reallocated capital from legacy industry toward new opportunities emerging from Asia's economic reforms. Early investments focused on the insurance and technology sectors, aligned with liberalisation trends, rising household wealth, and the advent of internet technology. Well-timed exits ahead of the 2008 global financial crisis preserved capital and positioned the Group to redeploy into distressed real estate and private equity at attractive valuations.
